Staff Vote may scupper new terms

The UCD authorities face the biggest policy disaster in years if staff follow students next week in rejecting the proposed implementation of a two term calendar in the 1995-96 academic year. Staff will have the opportunity to cause the academic and administrative authorities a major publicity disaster in a postal ballot initiated by the Students’ Union with the support of the Academic Staff Association, IFUT and SIPTU. If they reject semesterisation, the Students’ Union are planning to embarrass the authorities in Belfield through a media campaign which will question the authority of the Academic Council to impose an academic calendar which both staff and students reject. Such adverse publicity for the college may affect the number of first preference CAO applications for UCD over the next two or three years and will be particularly embarrassing for President Art Cosgrove, who came to office on the promise of raising staff morale by consulting them more frequently than previous presidents did on administrative and academic decisions.
