CD Review: Cocaine EP

Album: Cocaine EPArtist: The InternetGrade: B-Most people are probably familiar with the LA-based rap collective OFWGKTA by now, and if you aren’t then where the hell have you been?  They have taken the blogosphere by storm and The Internet is the newest side project undertaken by the collective.  The group is made up of the beat master for most of their tunes, Syd Tha Kyd, their sole female member, and Matt Martian.  The Cocaine EP is very different to what you may be used to from the collective, but that is by no means a bad thing.  The familiar horrorcore-esque rap is dropped in favour of some really slick down-tempo tunes with silky vocals over the top.The combination of sleek vocals and the brilliantly layered synths gives the EP, especially tracks like ‘Cocaine’ and ‘Love Song -1’, a soulful feel similar to Little Dragon’s style.  The stand out track is ‘They Say’, which has a brilliant backing track and is really accentuated by Syd’s vocals. In a nutshell: A successful EP that sets the stage for a solid debut.
