Welfare is often one of the more visible roles of the union, as individual cases demand so much attention. The Welfare officer needs to be approachable but also well-versed in the university politics. They should offer bother individual support and broader awareness of student issues. While it is disappointing to see the role uncontested for the second year in a row, Mac Dohmnaill encompasses many of the qualities needed. Relaxed in his interview, he appears approachable yet also understands how the union and UCD operate. He will not need as much time to get to know the issues as other candidates will and should be a reliable Welfare officer.
