At a total cost of €11,888.72 across two semesters, UCD has the country’s most expensive on-campus student rooms to rent. For single-semester students, the cost is even greater.

The Village 3 Ensuite room comes to a total of €11,888.72 for the period of September 1st to May 18th. This includes the booking free and security deposit, along with utilities. The monthly cost for the Village 3 Ensuite room (rent + utilities) comes to a total of €1,385.53. A shared bedroom in Village 1 is the cheapest room to rent in UCD, which comes to €5,722.07 for the same period of seven months.

However, for students renting on campus for only one semester, the cost increases. For the period between September 1st and December 21st, the same Village 3 Ensuite costs €6,202.46. This means that the monthly bill for the same room comes to €1,686.63 for single-semester students - in comparison to €1,385.53 for students staying for both semesters. The shared bedroom accommodation is not an option available for single-semester students, meaning that the next cheapest accommodation available for them is that of Belgrove and Merville, which both come to €1,139.17 per month, and costs €4,189.20 in total for the September to December period.

Trinity College Dublin has the second-most costly on-campus rooms to rent at €10,085.71 for a double room at Printing House Square. This is for the period of September 10th to May 8th. For a 31-day month, this works out to €1,302.74, inclusive of utilities. TCD’s cheapest on-campus accommodation is its Pearse Street location, which comes to a total €6,335.54 for the period of September 10th to May 8th. TCD also offers off-campus accommodation at its Trinity Hall location for the price of €6,066.79 for the same period - however, this accommodation is designated for first-year students only.

Following the success of its Digs Drive initiative last year, UCDSU, alongside colleges across Dublin, will once again call on homeowners in Dublin to rent out their spare rooms to students at fair and reasonable prices. Last year, students’ unions from UCD, TCD, DCU, NCAD and IADT distributed flyers across Dublin city centre in an attempt to tackle the impact of the housing crisis on students.
