UCD Student Union’s first Council meeting of the year was held on Monday September 30, with many of the 239 newly-elected class representatives in attendance. 148 of these new class representatives won their seats in uncontested competitions, while 91 positions had contested elections. Within these contested elections, a total of 1,730 votes were cast, meaning an average of 19 votes were cast in each election. Of the 498 available seats, just over half did not receive a class representative, with 259 positions going unfilled.

Nominations for class representative opened to UCD students on September 2 and closed on September 18. Elections for the positions took place on September 23 and 24, which were advertised on the UCDSU instagram page. Training for new class representatives took place on September 26 and 27, which was followed by the first council meeting on September 30. The meeting saw the re-election of Council Chairperson Niall Torris and the election of Cillian Murphy as Deputy Chairperson.

The meeting saw two motions passed, one to amend the Student Union Housing Policy and the other in relation to the continued efforts by UCDSU to lobby the government to abolish the student contribution charge. You can read more about the first council meeting of the year here
