UCD Ranked Top Irish University For Sustainability, 49th Globally

UCD Improves one place since last year and currently ranks 49th globally for sustainability, latest QS World University Rankings reveals

According to the latest QS World University Rankings for sustainability, University College Dublin is the top ranking Irish University, and is ranked 49th globally.

The latest rankings, which were published on Tuesday 10 December, puts UCD as one of the leading universities of the 1,743 ranked across the world, with an overall score of 92. 

UCD is the only Irish university to feature in the top 100, with UCC ranking next best at 127 with an overall score of 84.4. University of Galway, DCU and University of Limerick follow in 140th, 174th and 224th respectively, whilst Trinity College Dublin is ranked 265th globally. 

Rankings are determined by a methodology that assesses ‘Environmental Impact’, ‘Social Impact’, and ‘Governance’. ‘Environmental Impact’ is broken down into three categories; Environmental Education, Environmental Research, Environmental Sustainability. ‘Social Impact’ refers to; Employability and Opportunities, Equality, Health & Wellbeing, Impact of Education and Knowledge Exchange.‘Governance’ is graded on; Good Governance.

UCD performed particularly well in the ‘Equality’ category within ‘Social Impact’, ranking 10th globally.

In a statement published by UCD, Vice President for Sustainability Professor Tasman Crowe said he was “Delighted that UCD has held its position in the top 50 worldwide and its number one spot in Ireland. This ranking is the result of the commitment, vision and hard work of many academics, professional staff and students in UCD.”

He continued, “It provides a strong foundation for further developing our contributions to sustainability through the integration of our research, education and operational activities and through our wider engagement and partnership.”

The University of Toronto tops the world rankings this year with a score of 100, whilst ETH Zurich is a close second at 99.6. Lund University in Sweden, and University of California Berkeley jointly round off the top three universities globally.
