With upcoming deadlines and a cost-of-living crisis, Kelly Smyth highlights the importance of taking a break.
As the end of semester approaches, stress levels are high, and often self-care has gone out the window. Sometimes what you need is a break! Many of you may find your Google searches alternating between Brightspace and Booking.com, but trying to catch a break can sometimes be more daunting than sitting your exams. As students, limited budgets and tight schedules certainly don’t make it any easier, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
Whether it’s a time-saving staycation or a chaotic early-in-late-out flight abroad, I believe the art of the weekend away is easily mastered if you know where to look.
1) Research Your Destination Carefully.
When it comes to a weekend away, time constraints are always a heavy burden. Whether it’s in Ireland or abroad, public transport is your friend. For nature lovers, the picturesque Glendalough is an opportunity for a reset and is accessible by bus. If you are up for a city break, both Galway and Belfast are easily accessible by train.
If you would prefer a trip abroad, keep an eye out for reduced flight prices on sites like Ryanair or Skyscanner. A quick Google search for events in the area can also be helpful to ensure you aren’t arriving when prices are high (such as unknowingly booking Paris during the Olympics, from personal experience).
2) Embrace Budget Friendly Accommodation
There are so many great travel options besides hotels when choosing your destination. Hostels are the perfect way to save money and make friends from all walks of life. Websites such as Airbnb, Booking.com, and Loveholidays.com have amazing affordable listings for your stay. These websites can also advertise upcoming deals for the holiday season, so check regularly. My biggest piece of advice for this would always be to check reviews to ensure the place is reputable and safe.
3) Pack Right and Light
No matter where you go, packing can make or break your trip. Make sure you have items for all weather and locations, such as a compact umbrella and walking shoes. Also, make sure you don’t overpack. You don’t want to pay extra fees for large luggage you don’t need.
4) Unplug and Unwind
The most important piece of advice of all is to let yourself relax. While you will want to see everything, don’t rush yourself. Turn off your notifications and unwind in the new environment. Take the time to enjoy your well-deserved break and switch off.
A weekend away is important for your well-being, especially coming up to the end of the semester. Take the time to care for yourself and be away from the books to clear your mind. With this advice in mind, enjoy booking your next trip!
