Kevin Jopeck gives UCD freshers a guide to societies and what to be aware of before joining
With nearly 100 societies on campus, it’s easy for new students to feel overwhelmed. Luckily, the Harpy has compiled a list of our favorite societies for all those struggling to find their place at UCD.
Literary and Historical Society: UCD’s oldest society founded in 1855. We recommend heading over for their coffee mornings which feature the preserved remains of the society’s founder. Each week they put him in a new pose, so make sure to grab a cup and snap a selfie!
Games Society: Likely UCD’s busiest society, GameSoc has games available to play every day. We recommend bringing at least €500 to place bets with so you don’t miss out on the action.
Film Society: One of UCD’s most popular societies, students can enjoy free films at UCD’s own cinema with multiple showings a week. We recommend not making the same mistake as our writer and showing up to the After Dark showings expecting something other than a movie.
Psychology Society: One of UCD’s fastest growing societies, PsychSoc has plenty of events for students regardless of major. We recommend attending their Manipulating Your Friends workshop to help you deal with that one tricky friend.
UCD is full of wonderful societies, including many that we didn’t list here. We recommend joining as few societies as possible to ensure you get the most out of your €2 fees (you can get free food from most of them anyway). We at the Harpy wish you luck for the coming year!
