Otwo Co-Editor Orla Mahon guides us through some of the events and venues that centre Black identity in Dublin
Inclusivity has become a buzzword, yet at the same time, being able to express yourself and all aspects of your identity within a community that accepts and supports you is one of the most beautiful feelings in the world. The traditional Irish night out can feel alienating for many - bringing with it an awareness of oneself and one’s surroundings, and the discontent of feeling othered. In honour of Black History Month, we decided to take a look at some of the spaces and events that celebrate Black identities year-round. While the experiences of many minority groups in Dublin’s nightlife scene invoke feelings of fear and pain, the solace of community and the joy of creativity that these spaces provide is undoubtedly a comfort.
AV Club
A tongue-in-cheek advisory note sits in this collective’s Instagram bio - get with it or get out! This is one of the most exciting new art collectives in Dublin, with the goal of celebrating Black alternative culture in Ireland. Their inaugural event, Blackout, is due to be held on the 18th of October at Crowbar Terrace. Alternative acts will take the stage, blurring the lines of genres - from punk to hip hop, and so much more. A portion of profits raised from the event will be donated towards Friends of the Congo.
Afro Room Dublin
Held every Saturday at Ohana Dublin, this club night promises Afrobeats, Amapiano, RnB, and good vibes - as well as a designated hype man. The event kicks off at 10pm and continues well into the night. Occasionally their events centre around a theme, such as their celebration for Nigerian Independence Day. If you’re not in Dublin at the weekends, Afro Room also hosts events across the country, from Cork to Galway to Belfast.
Haus of Schiaparelli
In keeping with the ballroom theme from another article in this section (wink wink), this gem couldn’t go unmentioned. Haus of Schiaparelli is a ballroom event focused on celebrating black and brown queer people. A space for community, inclusivity, intersectionality, and most importantly, fun. Keep an eye on their Instagram for upcoming events - @hausofschiaperelli.
