Relay for Life returns for its fifth year

UCD held its fifth Relay for Life event this year on the 12th and 13th April in aid of the Irish Cancer Society (ICS).Holly Keating, the secretary for UCD Relay for Life said “as this year is Relay's fifth birthday we decided on the theme 'Take 5'. This theme relates to taking 5 minutes to check yourself for breast, skin, prostate, penile and testicular cancers.”Keating spoke about the success of last year with “an attendance of 50 teams and over 800 people and we managed to raise over €15,000… we're expecting a similar attendance this year”.Relay for Life is a 24-hour fundraising event that aims to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, remember those we have lost to the disease, and fight back by increasing knowledge of cancer and raising money to fund research.Relay for Life UCD started Wednesday afternoon with an opening ceremony and different activities throughout the 24 hours such as silent discos, a comedy hour and much more. The main event within Relay is the Candle of Hope Ceremony which is where someone can purchase a candle bag with all proceeds going to the ICS, the candles are decorated and lit as the sun goes down. The event requires team members to be moving for the 24-hour event. To keep teams motivated and moving, Red Bull and Arctic Stone attended the event. To donate €4, text RELAY to 50300
