This week, Arinola Theatre announced their new digital magazine, My City Too.
We’re approaching the one year anniversary of the riots that occurred in Dublin city centre, and yet for many, it feels like little has changed - or at least, changed in a positive sense. The few conversations that still occur surrounding the Dublin riots centralise the perpetrators - rather than the minority groups that were the target of their rage. A new venture from some Dublin-based creatives aims to change this narrative.
This week, Arinola Theatre announced their new digital magazine, My City Too. The magazine is aimed at drawing attention to the experiences of minority groups who have faced racial violence in Ireland. My City Too will focus particularly on the Dublin riots, and how the experiences associated with it have affected individuals and their relationship with Dublin. They also want to bring attention to anti-immigration protests that people have experienced locally. The collective welcomes the submission of poems, creative writing, art and photography - as they say themselves, “There is no criteria for submission, please just share your art with us.”
Reflecting on experiences of pain and producing art from this is not only a method of self-healing. The expression of these feelings through a creative form can also bring communities together, and in this way can become a vehicle for enacting structural change.
We’re excited to see what My City Too will become, and we have full faith Arinola Theatre will produce a magazine that is inspiring, healing, yet haunting. Submissions for the project remain open until October 27th, and can be submitted via Arinola Theatre’s Instagram page - @arinolatheatre.
