The University Observer is seeking section editors for Volume XXIV.To apply, please contact editor@universityobserver.ie with a short cover letter outlining reasons for applying and relevant experience, as well as a minimum of two (no more than five) relevant writing samples (links to online content are acceptable) from the University Observer or other publications. The subject line of your email should include the title of the position you are applying for.Prior involvement with the University Observer is preferred, but not essential. You must be a registered student of University College Dublin to apply. We are accepting applications until Monday 7th August at 5pm. News Editor:The News Editor will be responsible for reporting, investigative journalism and news analysis content in the University Observer. The ideal candidate will have experience writing news for a student publication, a good understanding of the reporting style of a broadsheet newspaper, and a desire to cover campus stories fairly and objectively. Deputy News Editor:The Deputy News Editor will work with the News Editor in reporting, investigative journalism and news analysis content in the University Observer. The ideal candidate will have experience writing news for a student publication, a good understanding of the reporting style of a broadsheet newspaper, and a desire to cover campus stories fairly and objectively.The news editors will work together to decide on content and edit material for each print issue. They will also work with the online editors to source content for the website. If you wish to be considered for this role as well as News Editor, please state so in your cover letter. Online News Editor:The Online News Editor will be responsible for working with the two broadsheet news editors in order to keep the website current with the latest campus news. They will both handle the print stories on the website, as well as assigning extra articles written specifically for online. They will be responsible for distributing content and editing it to appear on the website. The ideal candidates will have previous writing or editing experience for a student publication and a good knowledge of the various writing styles used in the University Observer, preferably in the area of news. Comment Editor:The Comment Editor will be responsible for selecting and editing all content in the University Observer’s comment section. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in international, national and on-campus current affairs, and will have experience writing about them from a critical perspective. Features Editor:The Features Editor will be responsible for selecting and editing all content in the University Observer’s features section. The ideal candidate will be an experienced writer familiar with the style requirements of features writing. This includes an interest in national and international and on-campus current affairs, as well as experience in investigative journalism. Online Comment and Features Editor:The Online Comment and Features Editor will liaise with the Comment and Features Editors to keep comment and features content on the website up to date with current affairs. They will be responsible for selecting and editing content specifically for online. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in national, international and on-campus current affairs, and experience in critical writing and investigative journalism. Online Science Editor:The Online Science Editor will be responsible for keeping science news current on the website. They will work with the Science Editor and select and edit articles specifically for online. The ideal candidate does not need to be a science student, but will have a demonstrable interest in and familiarity with multiple areas of research, and have an ability to make technical issues appealing to a popular readership. Sports Editor:The Sports Editor will be in charge of the University Observer’s coverage of national, international and campus sporting events, though it is important to note that emphasis should be placed on campus sport. The ideal candidate will have experience in sports journalism and a keen interest in promoting UCD’s sporting culture through features, interviews and match reports. Online Sports Editor:The Online Sports Editor will be responsible for working with the sports editors to keep the website current with the latest sports news. They will select and edit articles written specifically for online. Sports Photographer:The Sports Photographer will work with the Design Editor and Chief of Photography to generate high-quality photographic content from sporting events for print and online publication. Online Columns Editor:The Online Columns Editor will be responsible for a series of online columns. They will be responsible for selecting the themes of columns and assigning articles to columnists. The ideal candidate will have an interest in current affairs and experience in writing for Comment/Features/Opinion.Food Editor:The Food Editor will be responsible for selecting and editing all content in the food and drink section of OTwo. The ideal candidate will have previous writing experience, and will have a good understanding of and interest in food journalism.Chief of Photography:The Chief of Photography will work with the Design Editor to generate high-quality photographic content for print and online publication and manage a team of photographers.
