Andrea O’Connor dishes out the good news we need to start the semester right.

It’s that time of year again when excited viewers gather around their electronics to see the highly anticipated winners of the Golden Globes Awards. They say the new year brings hope, and this year’s Golden Globes Awards has been very fortunate for the Irish. The luck of the Irish!

To start off, Cillian Murphy won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture in the Drama category for his performance in Oppenheimer. The Cork actor delivered his speech with lipstick on his nose (courtesy of his wife), “To all my fellow nominees, if you’re Irish or not, you’re all legends.” Oppenheimer won a whopping five awards this year. Another Irish victory was Poor Things, which was produced by Dublin’s Element Pictures. Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe’s production beat Barbie for Best Comedy or Musical Film. With great excitement coming into the new year, there’s hope for more awards this year for Irish talent as we gear up for 2024’s BAFTA Awards, where Irish actors Cillian Murphy, Barry Keoghan and Paul Mescal all received nominations.
