Life Editor Ella Power introduces the five Dublin music venues every students need to get on their radar this college year.
New to Dublin and looking for somewhere to catch a gig and enjoy some live music? From huge international acts to intimate shows and late club nights, here are five Dublin venues worth keeping an eye on this college year.
3Arena
The 3Arena is one of the largest and most popular music venues in Ireland, with a capacity of 13,000. Despite its size, the arena’s ‘fan’ shape means that wherever you are, you’ll never have a bad view of the stage. With huge names like U2, Sabrina Carpenter and Kneecap performing here in the past, this is the place to go if you want to see your favourite stars.
Artists set to perform in the 3 Arena soon include:
- The Strokes on the 28th of October,
- Noah Kahan on the 19th, 21st and 22nd of November
- Phoebe Bridgers on the 23rd and 24th of November
Tickets for performances in the 3 Arena are available through Ticketmaster, and although many concerts may be sold out currently, don’t be disheartened! Resale tickets on the website pop up frequently, and if you’re a three mobile customer, you can register for the Three+ rewards app to have access to presale for any concerts taking place in this venue.
The Workman’s Club
The Workman’s Club is the place to start if you are looking to discover Dublin’s next big musical act. With bands such as Fontaines DC and The Murder Capital playing here in their early days, this venue and its iconic black and white tiles have become an important stepping stone for up and coming Irish artists. Workman’s continues to platform rising musicians; allowing concertgoers the chance to discover their music before it reaches a mainstream audience.
Beyond the venue’s main performance area, Workman’s has a dedicated comedy club, rooftop terrace and a large bar. Across these spaces, a constant rotation of music, comedy and entertainment takes place seven nights a week, all set against views of the River Liffey.
Upcoming music events and artists in The Workman’s Club include:
- Lauren Wallace on the 17th of September
- Just Like Heaven: Alt 80’s Party on the 26th of September
- The Wran on the 9th of October
Tickets are available through the Workman's Club website. With celebrities like Morrissey and Paul Mescal spotted in the audience here over the years, this venue clearly has credible endorsements as an ideal place to experience Dublin’s musical talent and enjoy a memorable night out.
The Grand Social
If you’re looking for a venue with character, The Grand Social is well worth a visit. Located beside the Ha’penny Bridge, its distinctive circus style interior and lively atmosphere make it a popular spot for students looking to experience Dublin’s music scene. As well as being a great place for after work or post-college drinks, the venue showcases a wide variety of events, from themed club nights and DJ sets, comedy sets and live performances. The impressive sound system further enhances the atmosphere, especially during its live gigs and club nights.
The venue has previously welcomed artists such as Picture This and The Academic and continues to attract a diverse range of acts, making it an interesting place to discover new and emerging artists while enjoying a lively night out.
Coming to the venue soon:
- Daily J on the 15th of September
- The Lemonheads on the 18th of September
- SOFY on the 12th of October
Tickets are available through the Grand Social website and Eventbrite at affordable prices. Whether you are there for the music or the atmosphere, The Grand Social offers plenty to look forward to this college year.
The Button Factory
Seeking a more intimate and alternative music venue? The Button Factory is the place to go. Originally opening its doors as The Temple Bar Music Centre with the aim to become the cultural home of Irish music, The Button Factory has certainly fulfilled its promise of supporting a vibrant arts scene. The venue hosts club nights and performers in various stages of stardom, from touring artists to local musicians and emerging artists.
The Button Factory’s relatively small size creates a lively and energetic atmosphere, with urban décor, a crowd packed around the dance floor and stage, and a fantastic sound system that completes the experience. Notable artists such as MF DOOM and Inhaler have performed here. Speaking from personal experience, seeing Inhaler play to a crowd of just 500 in 2019 before their rise to fame, showcases exactly what makes The Button Factory special: the chance to experience artists up close in an intimate venue before they reach the biggest stages.
Performing here soon:
- Kalia Vandever on September 13th
- Os Garotin on September 20th
- Huartan on October 30th
Tickets are available through the Button Factory website and Eventbrite at student-friendly prices, making it an ideal choice for a night of live music without breaking the bank.
The Academy
The Academy is a venue with something for everyone. From large capacity performances on the main stage, to Academy 2’s intimate gigs in the basement, and DJ fuelled club nights in the green room, the venue offers a unique mix of music and nightlife central to Dublin’s music scene. The main Academy stage has welcomed icons like David Bowie, while the basement has helped launch the careers of artists such as Mumford & Sons and Bastille. Although widely accredited as one of the best live music spots in the city, the venue’s industrial interior and smaller spaces give it a raw and more alternative feel that sets it apart from other larger venues.
Performances here soon include:
- Chrissy Chlapecka on the 24th of September
- 54 Ultra on the 6th of October
- Chloe Slater on November 19th
Tickets for all shows are available through Ticketmaster, and with its central location on Abbey Street, The Academy is a solid option for students to catch live music.
