On September 10th, the conservative talk show host Charlie Kirk, known for his “Prove Me Wrong” tours, was shot at Utah University.
Charlie Kirk grew up in Illinois as the son of a notable architect. He left university to pursue a career as a right-wing public figure known for his strong online presence via talk shows and public debates. He was an ally of the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, as well as a member of the ultra-conservative Tea Party group, and founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organisation in the United States. He is noted as a controversial figure who often gained criticism for his views on civil rights, gender, gun control, and race. Months before this event, Charlie Kirk stated, “It's worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment.”
As a part of his “America Comeback Tour”, Charlie was midway through his Prove Me Wrong show, in which participants are encouraged to challenge his beliefs on the stated topic at the time. The event was disrupted as a gunshot rang out, and Charlie Kirk fell to the ground. Kirk was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to the inflicted gunshot wounds. He leaves behind two children and his wife, who were also in attendance at the event along with 3,000 bystanders.
Following the event, many notable right-wing figures publicly stated their outrage and grief. The current governor of Utah, Spencer Cox, describes the event as “a political assassination.”
President Donald J. Trump stated on X,
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie… He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us."
Condemnation is not solely uttered by conservatives in America, with former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris having condemned the attack. They both express their resolve to end political violence in America as the country moves towards an unstable future politically.
At the current moment, the FBI has stated they detained a suspect who was later released. Further photo and video evidence reveal a man in sunglasses who is currently evading authorities. The FBI has released a bounty of 100,000$ for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. The motive for the attack is currently unknown.
The following day, as the suspect continued to flee authorities, Donald Trump ordered flags across the United States to hang at half-mast. Trump has also announced his intention to award Charlie Kirk the Medal of Freedom.
