Bikinis and Beachy Bits!

Summer is almost here, and prior to jetting off on holidays, or even just hopping on the Dart to find a shore to tan on, Lidiya Zhang covers some cute combos for all your sandy seaside sunning sessions!

Ah summer, when 99 cones start melting quicker than usual and iced coffees taste better than ever, when a pint can finally be grabbed outdoors … Did you hear that? Sounds like it's about to be summer! Yes, I know it’s only April, but God forbid a woman be excited for something - I’ve been bathing in the afternoon sun in front of UCDs lake every day for the past week. Anything, and I mean anything, for a bit of the rays (even if they are only UV 3).

If you’ve been doing your daily dose of scrolling (I wish I hadn’t been, but oh well, here we are), perhaps the ‘whimsical’ trend has popped up on your feed at least once or twice. In fact, ‘whimsy’ is one of the most used buzzwords online in 2026. For those who are unfamiliar with the term, ‘whimsy’ in fashion includes but isn’t limited to all things colours, fun patterns, glitter, ladybirds, buttons, and beads. I would call it the ‘internet’s final realisation of the human need to reignite your childhood passion,’ but hey, that’s just me. With all this being said, my Pinterest board is out, and I hope yours is too - because we’re starting the outfit planners for summer 2026.

Starting with swimwear; bikinis, tankinis, one pieces, full body suits - the world is our oyster! I already know this summer will be all about patterns, so I’d use keyword searches followed by swimwear styles: polka dots, gingham stripes, fleurs, checkered, argyle, only to name a few. Not to be that person, but do keep in mind that when it comes to swimwear, it’s quality over quantity! I promise that you would rather spend your hard-earned money (or maybe not, because we’re in UCD after all… Have you seen the price of a sandwich?) on an item that won’t fall apart after a few swims, or at least, on a bikini that wasn’t made through child labour. Opt for sustainable, ethical brands! I promise it makes you ten times cooler (I’m sure you’re already cool but...) We, as consumers, have the responsibility to look after this earth!

While optional, a cover-up over swimwear adds so much to an outfit! They are perfect for pulling over a bikini, ready for an easy bite before you get changed into something else for dinner.  Some quick-fire ideas: a sheer lace dress, linen pants, printed shorts, a light, airy maxi dress. If you’re more of a DIY person, why not try making a crochet dress or jumper? With crocheting, honestly, the choices are endless - wraparound tops, matching sets, even a cowl-neck! But if you’re less of a DIY person, and it’s in your budget, you can even ask a local crocheter to custom-make one for you. If that doesn’t fit your needs right now, there are soooo many options for cover-ups available on Vinted, so I’d definitely recommend checking them out - circular fashion, remember?

All my fashion girlies know that fun accessories are the best part about styling. There are the simpler seashell necklaces and bracelets, but recently I’ve been loving the vibe of handmade ceramic pendants and colourful bead necklaces. Whimsical, if I must say so myself. Arm cuffs have also risen in popularity, and I can only imagine how perfect they’ll look with a matching swimsuit. Top all of this off with a set of summer nails, it’s literally *chef’s kiss.*(And if I can just shamelessly plug @mochimoon.nails…) Flea markets are treasure troves for the most affordable, unique finds - you’ll pick up items so special they'll turn you into that annoying person who just has to mention they thrifted them whenever they get a compliment.

Say what you want about feet but best believe I’m showing off my fresh pedicures in my stylish shoes this summer. Wood sandals that look very much like flip-flops with a kitten heel seem perfect to pair with a white flowy skirt. Even a basic Birkenstock Boston would work!  PUMA speedcat ballet flats have also been incredibly tempting on my shopping list. Strappy sandals are so unbelievably chic, and you can even go for a pair with a slight wedge. The extra leverage definitely helps to avoid having to go through the tedious tapping of toes to get the sand out of your shoes, and perhaps also give you some height to be taller than any short king who crosses your summer loving path. Anyways, ankle bracelets anyone?

Oh, how I love a bit of whimsy, among the trends, the polka dots and the sand, remember that fashion is sooo subjective - and that’s the best part! Wear all the colours, patterns, and textures your heart desires. Have fun experimenting, and I will see you at the Forty Foot!
