Alumni awards held in UCD

LAST Friday night saw the third annual UCD Alumni Awards, with 10 different awardees from different departments. Held in the O’Reilly Hall, the awardees included All-Ireland winner Colm O’Rourke and Benjamin Cleary, winner of the Academy Award for best Live Action Short 2015.

Speaking at the event, UCD President Andrew Deeks claimed that alumni are “the backbone of the university.” On the UCD Alumni Awards website it explains that: “as students, our alumni made lifelong connections with their classmates and with this institution. The UCD Alumni Awards celebrate this connection and are a testament to just how important our alumni are to us.”

Previous recipients of awards have included Jonathan Sexton, Miriam O’Callaghan, Nóirín O’Sullivan and Jim Sheridan. The event has grown out of the foundation day medal, which was first granted in 2004 to Peter Sutherland.

The evening also included an appearance by comedian Dara O’Briain and Pat Leahy, deputy political editor of the Irish Times. Performances by the UCD Choral Scholars and the Jazz society finished the evening.
